BIRCH RCA detail view, showing the structured workflow that turns a downtime event into accountable action.
ASPEN, our Downtime Tracking and Analytics module, was always good at one thing: capturing what happened on the floor. Every minute of downtime, every machine center, every failure code — collected automatically, surfaced in real time, ranked by impact. Customers saw the value in the first month.
And then the same conversation kept happening on every customer call. “We can see the data now. We know which machine centers are killing us. Now what?”
The honest answer was: “Now you go run a root cause analysis and build an action plan with assigned owners and due dates and track them to closure.” Those workflows lived — for most of our customers — in a Word doc, a shared drive, or somebody’s email. And this is where the loop quietly broke. ASPEN made the downtime visible, and the RCA work made it explainable. But without something tracking the action plan through to closure, the same downtime kept showing up. The Pareto chart from January looked uncomfortably like the Pareto chart from June.
BIRCH closes that loop. It picks up where ASPEN leaves off — taking a downtime event and giving it a structured place to live as an RCA, with the right metadata captured automatically: machine center, production line, functional location, failure type, failure code, shift, operator, downtime duration, etc. Then it tracks the action plans that come out of that RCA, with assigned owners, due dates, and LATE flags when work slips.
It isn’t glamorous software. There’s no AI insight engine, no predictive maintenance promise. It takes the RCA documentation and follow-through work that every plant claims to do (and very few actually do well), and standardizes it as the path of least resistance.
That’s the bet we made: that closing the loop on the causes of downtime matters much more than just having the data showing the downtime. ASPEN captures downtime. BIRCH makes sure something changes because of it. Together, they’re how a manufacturing operation actually improves.
If you’re an ASPEN customer, BIRCH is available now. If you’re not yet a MADERA customer, talk to us about both.
